The Incomparable Grace Jones

I get so enthralled with actors and performers who have a certain uniqueness about them. One that is creative and unduplicated to where they stand out in the world, so polished in their craft and with such grace. Grace Jones is her name and she has a style all her own.

The blessed icon was born in Spanish Town Jamaica on May 19, 1948 (Taurus) to parents Marjorie and Robert W. Jones. Her father was a politician and Apostolic clergyman. Grace's parents moved her and her brothers, Chris and Noel Jones to Syracuse in 1965. Grace Jones always had a desire to be an actor/entertainer so she studied theatre at Onondaga Community College long before becoming a successful model in New York City and Paris. In 1973 she came across a great opportunity to star in the film "Gordon's War" where she played the role of Mary, a Harlem drug courier.

Shortly after her first film, Grace took on a modeling career when she became quite notable after her first film debut. She landed her first record deal with Island Records in 1977 and her hits resulted into a string of dance-club hits. In the late 1970's she began to adapt into the electronic music scene and created her own androgynous look of a square hair cut and angular padded clothing which became a popular trend during that time. In 1981 her music jam "Pull Up to the Bumper" hit single spent several weeks in the #2 spot on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play charts and then shortly became the Top 5 single on the U.S R&B chart.

She was known for the very popular albums "Warm Leatherette", "Nightclubbing", and "Slave to the Rhythm" just to name a few as her new style in music started to accelerate and consequently she entertained an undivided gender yet Gays was her largest audience and they loved her. Those that didn't appreciate her distinguished uniqueness misjudged her as many men saw her as a muse.

Between the 1970's and 1980's Grace was in a relationship with a French graphic designer, Jean-Paul Goude of whom she birth a son named Paulo.

Grace Jones is also an actress and her acting often took precedence in her music output in America, but in Europe her profile as a recording artist was much higher. She appeared in many low-budget films in the 70's and early 80's but as an actress in mainstream films her career really began in 1984 in the fantasy-action film "Conan the Destroyer" along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and one of my favorites the 1985 James Bond movie "A View to a Kill". In 1986 she played a vampire in the movie "Vamp" and acted in and contributed a song to the 1992 film "Boomerang" with Eddie Murphy. In 2001 she appeared in "Wolf Girl" along with Tim Curry.

Her engagement to Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren was ended and in 1996 she fell in love and married Atila Altunbay but is currently divorced.

To this day the 63 year old 5'10 1/2 (1.79m) Grace Jones is the only known lowest singing female artist I know although there maybe a few that comes close. Known for her androgynous appearance and outrageous music performances which is why she is quite unique and a highly stylised vocalist. She has been an inspiration for numerous other artist, including Annie Lennox(33),Lady Gaga(34) and Madonna (53) just to name a few.

Grace Jones, an extradinary icon with extradinary talent.
